good morning. i'm eun yang. good morning, i'm aaron gilchrist. we're tracking everything going on inside that courtroom at this hour. we'll bring you updates as soon as they come in. right now, we're watching what's going on in the midwest. much of the country buried by an intense and rare winter storm. two deaths are being blamed on the snow. the worst of it is in kansas and oklahoma where some places have seen as much as a foot and a half of snow. interstates are shut down, sleet and freezing rain are mixing in making driving nearly impossible. >> flying, pretty much a no go too. united airlines flight from denver just landed in wichita when it was stuck in the snow on the runway. passengers were stuck on board for about two hours there. workers had to dig the plane out and then clear a path for a bus so it could bring pass swrers to the terminal. despite the delay, passengers say it wasn't that bad. >> everybody wags this really

good spirits. by far the most entertaining delay in my life. it's been laughable to me. >> nice when you can grin and bear it. wichita seeing the largest snowfall on record. more than 14 inches of snow. >> we're not expected to get anything close to what they had in the west. meteorologist tom kierein has your forecast. tom? >> radar showing this area in gray, a few scattered flurries trying to reach the ground in northern rvirginia, the distric and into maryland too. the areas in light gray, just very light flurries right now. there's not a lot of moisture with this system as it's heading to the east. we do have, though, a winter weather advisory. all the areas in the lavender, including western maryland from alleghany county into garrett county and much of the panhandle of west virginia and central and southern shenandoah valley. these counties to the east of

avenue. train number 890, delays up to ten minutes. it's stopped because it struck a deer. expect delays on the brunswick east line. traveling on penn south train 511. you have a seven-minute delay. i'm back in ten. aaron, over to you. breaking news. a little more than an hour from now, we expect to learn whether olympian oscar pistorius will be granted bail. a judge supposed to present his ruling at 7:30 our time. prosecutors say the athlete poses a flight risk because he owns a home in italy. his defense argued this morning that pistorius' prosthetic legs keep him from getting through airport security easily and make him internationally recognizable. pistorius is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend on valentine's day. he thought she was an intrieder. metro transit police looking for a man who pepper sprayed a bus driver. this happened after midnight on pennsylvania avenue in southeast. the man tried to get a bus to

pick him up where there wasn't a bus stop. when the driver refused, the man attacked the driver with mace. the driver is okay. this morning, investigators say a deadly house fire that claimed the lives of a prince george's county fire -- no smoking detectors were found inside this home after it erupted in flames yesterday. the mother and 8-year-old girl are expected to be okay. an 11-year-old girl is still in the hospital. the cause of that fire still being investigated. a family member tells news 4 the family had kerosene heaters in the home. president obama and congress have less than a week to reach a deal to avoid the sequestration. drastic spending cuts will take effect a week from today. the president appears to be making a final effort to prevent those looming cuts. he called house speaker john boehner and mitch mcconnell yesterday. we're working to find out what the sides said but they describe them as good conversations. president obama will head to

a shipyard in newport news, virginia to warn of what the sequestration will mean to the defense industry. they're heavily dependent on the military. the pentagon announced that hundreds of thousands of civilian workers will be pu furloughed if no deal is reached. the zoo is waiting to make tough decisions. may have to close a major exhibit if the stalemate drags on long enough. it may have to rethink some major projects. that includes plans to acquire dheet cheetahs for the research facility in front royal. the sequestration showdown continues, we'll bring you every development as the march 1st deadline approaches. you'll find the latest updates on nbcwashington.com. 6:05 now. a montgomery county teacher arrested on sex abuse charges will learn whether he can be released on bond. 30-year-old timothy krupica touched two 11-year-old girls

inappropriately. this happened on several occasions this school year. krupica works at meadow hall elementary in rockville. he's held in jail since his arrest. he's due in court this afternoon. it could be tough to get to the district from virginia on metro this weekend. four stations on the orange line will shut down at 10:00 tonight. the vienna, dunn loring and east and wells falls church. you'll be able to take a free shuttle. there will be single track on the red line between friendship heights and to koem a avenue. all work should be done by monday morning. the event had washington that the president calls a powerful moment. mother nature turns a training mission into a rescue mission for some soldiers. we could have our own weather problems. light snow and sleet expected to arrive here. holy mackerel, that's a big fish. the overgrown goldfish that is threatening

you can't exactly fit this giant goldfish in a fishbowl. researchers reeled in this four-pounder at lake tahoe and they say it's not the first big catch there. it's concerning for scientists since goldfish are -- look how big that is. seriously. they're not freshwater fish. researchers blame aquarium dumping and say it's damaging the lake's ecosystem and raising algae levels which could cloud up the lake. >> when you go to the pet store, they put the fish in a bag. there's a trash bag for one that big. >> rock and ron in the control room have explained why it's possible. if tear in a constrained space, they can get that big or bigger if they have time and opportunity in front of them. that's all they need. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. here's tom. starting off this morning, we have a cloud cover and storm

welcome back. it's 6:15. this morning, police in nevada say they consider the people inside a car that took off after a shootout and fiery crash on the sunset strip armed and dangerous. this is new video of the moments after that crash yesterday morning. investigators say this was the result of a shootout between people in two cars. one of them a maserati driven by a rapper going by the name of kenny clutch. he crashed into a taxi killing him. the taxi driver and a passenger. three other cars also crashed and the other car involved in the gunfire took off. boeing tries to get its troubled 787 dreamliners back in the sky during a meeting with the faa. the airline manufacturer will present possible fixes for lithium-ion batteries that plagued some of the planes. last month the faa grounded the 787 around the world after lithium-ion batteries caught fire on two separate planes. even if boeing gets the planes

back in the air, united airlines says it's dropping its six 787s from the fleet through the beginning of june. a frightening rescue for three pamail tear i paratrooper. their parachutes were entangled in the trees. rescuers sent climbers up in the trees to get them down. none were injured. you may have seen the video, now the tsa is apologizing for trying to patdown a wheelchair-bound 3-year-old. the family was trying to get to disney world a week ago when the screener who said the toddler would need a patdown. the mother recorded the ordeal. she said her earrings, not her daughter's wheelchair set off the metal detector. agents inspected the wheelchair and let the little girl pass through without a patdown. they issued a statement apologizing for bad guidance given to the family. they do have a policy, however, that allows for a patdown if an agent can't figure out what set off the metal detector. had morning, we're learning

more about the push to get a potomac, maryland, man released from a cuban prison. chris van hollen returned from visiting alan gross in havana. he was arrested three years ago. gross was working as a contractor to update internet access for a small jewish community there. >> i think we're making some progress both in explaining the situation to the cuban government and the fact that u.s./cuban relations cannot advance until we resolve this issue. >> van hollen said gross has lost considerable weight since being locked up. he met with cuban president raul castro as well and called on that country to release gross from his 15-year sentence. anne arundel county will welcome a new era of leadership. lauren newman will be sworn in at 10:00.

she replaces disgraced executive john leopold. he used his private security detail to run personal and political errands and take him to sexual encounters. newman is currently howard county's economic development chief. schiele uphold his term which runs through 2014. you'll get to witness history today. a statue is set to arrive on capitol hill. the 9 foot tall bronze statue of parks will soon call the u.s. capitol home. it's the first full size statue of an african-american woman in the statuary hall. parks sparked the montgomery bus boycotts after being arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger in 1955. the official unveiling happens next wednesday in statuary hall. president obama will speak. this morning, decades of white house visitors are remembering the life of long time chief usher and curator rex skew continue. he passed away in fairfax.

right now millions of people digging out from a storm system that is coming in this direction. we're not expecting anything like this, but it's enough to make the drive home messy. good morning everyone. welcome back to "news4 today." i'm aaron gilchrist. i'm eun yang. well, you're not going to be able to tell right now, but we're going to have winter weather coming right now. tom kierein is on the weather deck to talk about the forecast. >> the flag flapping in a gentle breeze. coming in out of the south and east bringing some moisture. look at this. a live pick you are from the nbc4 hd city camera. you can see that little touch of pink on the underside of those clouds and we might have a little sun at sunrise. sunrise in 20 minutes at 6:50. there's a lot you cloyd cloudiness in next next. producing flurries that are

evaporating before they reach the ground. radar is showing that area of -- those areas in the light brighter white colors and the light gray much that's just a few scattered flurries. not a lot of moisture with this. just scattered flurries northern virginia, west virginia and into maryland. temperatures right now are only in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees. subfreezing all around the region. it's later today and into this evening that we may have some accumulating, a light accumulation of some snow and sleet. that's going to be later this afternoon between now and noon. maybe a few flurries, otherwise cloudy into the mid-30s by noon. a look at the rest of the day and into tonight. that's in ten minutes. danella has a look at traffic now. good morning. >> good morning. checking on a new accident. if you're traveling 395 northbound taking the exit ramp for seminary road. right now crash is in your right shoulder lane -- excuse me, left shoulder lane. earlier it was in the right lane. expect delays.

checking delays on 395. usual delays. heavy on the brakes at edsall road as you head northbound. they continue to seminary road. it will take you 14 minute to get to the 14th street bridge. not so bad, right? i-270, good news. great story to tell. from germantown in both directions, southbound and northbound. travel lanes are open. no manl i don't remember delays. no accidents to report. aaron and eun, back to you >> thank you, danella. lawmakers must consider changes to gun control laws in maryland. late last night a state senate committee approved a measure that would ban anyone from owning a handgun if they had been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility. current maryland law bans gun ownership for those voluntarily committed. the legislation goes to the full senate for debate next week. >> maryland's full senate will also take up the death penalty debate. a committee passed a bill repealing capital punishment there. a baltimore lawmaker wants to make maryland the latest state to legalize marijuana.

he introduced legislation making pot legal for anyone over the age of 21. the bill also creates a system to regulate and tax it like alcohol. the revenue that tax generates would help pay for treatment programs to prevent substance abuse. voters in colorado and washington state approved measures last november legalizing marijuana in those states. it could be a tense week next week for the d.c. council. d.c. council chairman phil mendelson says the council will vote whether to reprimand council member jim graham. he's accused of violating ethics rules while serving on the board. it's become a distraction mendelson said. graham insists he's done nothing wrong. he wants a hearing to clear his name of any wrongdoing. >> if this can be sold to five members of this council requested a special committee be convened to conduct a hearing. >> his conduct harmed adversely, adversely harmed the public's confidence in the integrity of

the district government. >> graham isn't facing any criminal charges. >> coming up on 6:34. this morning, we're hearing from d.c. fire and ems about what it says what happened when a man waited for an ambulance on new year's day. his family claimed he had to wait for an ambulance when he was having trouble breathing. they also claim it came from maryland. d.c. claims medics were on the scene within ten minutes. it claim the ambulance was from the district, not maryland. ford's family says it's been billed $700 for the service. d.c. officials say that was not a bill. it was a request for insurance information. 6:34 now. you want to put down your breakfast and listen up. 38,000 pounds of pork sausage is being recalled. food safety and inspection services is recalling all gwaltney mild pork sausage rolls. the company based in virginia is

warning that their products may contain small pieces of plastic. it affects 11 states, including the district and maryland. >> a new study says most americans are in favor of the president's proposal to raise the minimum wage. under the president's plan, the minimum wage would go from $7.25 to $9 an hour. 71% of americans back the plan and the plan is even supported across party lines. 87% democrats support the raise and half of republicans surveyed agree with it at as well. ahead, an unofficial oscar staple that you will not see during the show this year. plus, why police say a person attacked a bus driver overnight. a slogan square-off. that storm system that buried the midwest is approaching us. don't get out the shovels just yet. weather and traffic on the 1s. next

girl are expected to be okay. an 11-year-old girl is hospitalized still. the cause of the fire is still being investigated. a man is in jail accused of killing a retired atf agent. a facebook page set up to remember 55-year-old gregory holly. eric smith tried to rob him wednesday night. he was walking his dog in woodbridge, had just gotten home from church. he struggled with smith before the deadly shooting. music is helping some students in prince george's county deal with the loss of two classmates killed this week. suitland high school hosted a concert last night for the entire community. comes after the death of ninth grader charles walker jr. someone shot and killed him in hillcrest heights on monday. the next day another student was killed. five people were arrested in walker's death. no one yet in kidd's case. the general assembly will

vote on the most sweeping transportation bill in the commonwealth in nearly three decades. a committee of senators and delegates negotiated the measure this week. it would generate hundreds of millions of dollars for transportation projects and it would do so by replacing virginia's gas tax with a wholesale tax on gas. would also raise the commonwealth's sales tax, impose a fee on hybrid cars and shift about $200 million a year from the general fund. 15 before the hour now. we're now less than a week away from the deadline to avoid the sequestration. that means drastic spending cuts will automatically take effect one week from today if no deal is in place. president obama will head to a shipyard in newport news, virginia next week to warn about what the sequestration will mean to the defense industry. the area's economy is heavily dependent on the military. the president will likely argue that the cuts associated with sequestration will weaken national security. the president also reaching out to republican leaders to try to work out a last-minute deal. he called house speaker john

boehner and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell yesterday. still working to figure out what the sides said. but the white house describes those talks as good conversations. civilian employees at the defense department are facing furloughs if the sequestration takes effect. but it isn't just government workers who will feel the impact. many businesses are already seeing their bottom lines hurt. pentagon employees are adjusting how they spend their money. one business owner says it feels like we're in another recession. >> i mean, do they fix their car or buy their medicine or do they buy their groceries or pay their mortgage whatever is left over they hunker down on because they don't know what tomorrow is bringing. >> tens of thousands of civilian defense department workers could face one furlough day a week starting in april. that's a 20% pay cut. even the national zoo could have to make tough decisions if a deal isn't in place soon. according to the "washington post," it may have to consider closing one of the major

we'll see you in court says under armor. it's suing the big or rival alleging nike is illegally using its new slogan, i will. on social media sites begin with that exact wording. the company accuses nike of trying to confuse consumers by running separate ads similar to the protect this house campaign. under arm our is seeking punitive damages. nike isn't commenting. it's not the first time that the two have tussled. nike sued under armour over the moisture wicking athletic apparel. this is a very tight competitive market. >> indeed. courtney, thanks. have a great weekend. >> thank you, you too. we want you to know the next video could be tough to watch. the man in it is okay. but what happened may be a lesson for the next time you hit the ski slopes. it's actually a 17-year-old. jacob gutierrez hanging from a

chairlift in new mexico. he slipped off after trying to throw a snowball at his friends. after six minutes of hanging he plummeted 45 feet to the ground. he did not have the safety bar down apparently. essa live though he did suffer a lacerated liver, tears to both lungs, a hairline skull fracture, and a gash in his forehead. he's expected to make a full recovery. >> i can't watch it. it really makes my heart sink. my goodness gracious, he's so lucky. right now the snow is coming down and coming down hard on much of the nation's mid-section. two deaths are blamed on a storm that stretched from oklahoma to indiana. it's now headed this way. the weather channel's chris warren is live in chicago where it's coming down pretty good there. chris, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, eun. the snow is still coming down. but the big hit, the majority of the snow has already fallen here in chicago. right along lake shore drive heading into the city about a

couple of miles here. the red taillights, the ones heading into the city. the whitehead lights are heading out of the city. that road is in pretty good shape. almost 300 plows out. about 200 were out since midnight. most of the snow did fall here in chicago during the overnight hours before the rush. this coming down here is just a little bit of light snow. some of that leftover snow as this pushes out. this is the winter storm that dumped on the nation's m.d. section bringing in some cases more than a foot of snow in wichita. they picked up their second biggest snow day on record. so eun, what's going to happen is we're going to watch this part of the storm head to the north. the high end, maybe 6 inches of snow falling. otherwise, a small piece of this storm will break off and possibly bring another round of snow for the third weekend in a row for part of the northeast. >> wow, tough. chris warren live in chicago for us this morning. chris, thank you. >> of course, as that moves east, we have to be worried

about the system. schools opening two hours late today, anticipating not quite what they got in the midwest but an impact here. >> most of the moisture is heading and passing well west of us. we're on the warm side of that storm. we just have clouds from that storm that's way off in the midwest. it's quite a large system. it's bringing clouds over capitol hill. that's a live view from the nbc4 city camera. cloudy, reagan national. 33 degrees. we've got a light southeasterly breeze coming out of the northeast and in a few locations. as we look at the radar, these patches of gray and white is where they are getting snow. one little patch of snow moving out of west virginia that may be heading toward the northern shenandoah valley. may put down a brief coating, light coating. elsewhere, few scattered snow flurries, the northern neck of virginia trying to reach the ground. patches of gray, scattered light flurries into howard county, frederick and maryland. there is that one little patch of some light snow that may put

down a brief, very light coating northern shenandoah valley over the next hour. temperatures in the upper 20s to mid-20s out of the mountains and western maryland closer to washington. mid and upper 20s montgomery county. the rest of northern virginia. by noontime, in the mid-30s. and maybe 1:00, 2:00, upper 30s. then we may get more moisture beginning to move in and we could get big fat wet snowflakes for a time during the middle or end of the afternoon. perhaps mixing with a little bit of sleet into the early evening hours. by late evening, does look like that will change over to rain. areas east of washington does look like tonight maybe just some rain there. all these areas in the light blue zone, the district, montgomery county, northern virginia, areas to our west, a light coating. mainly on grassy areas and again, that's going to be this evening that we'll likely have that. off to our west, maybe an inch of snow and sleetment maybe a little bit of icing on some tree limbs and power lines from some freezing rain. that will be later on tonight
